The Performance Practice Development Lunchtime Series is excited to present "8" (八 bā) Strings: Shared Approaches and Interpretative Techniques Across Pipa and Violin with Dr. Lu LIU and Dr. Evgeny SORKIN.
This talk examines this interplay through a close reading of selected repertoires, exploring how inter-cultural performance practices shape interpretative strategies and aesthetic understanding. Focusing on the contrasting yet complementary timbres and techniques of the pipa and violin, we investigate how their interaction transcends their distinct performance techniques, enabling new forms of musical expression.
This talk features Dr. Lu Liu and Dr. Evgeny Sorkin with Jinqi Guo and Crystal Gu (Master of Music Students).
We propose that pipa and violin collaborations not only expand the horizons of performance practice but also reshape the ways we conceptualise inter-cultural dialogue in contemporary music-making!
